Back before George W. Bush was the Governor of the State of Texas, a lady by the name of Ann Richards held that high office. She was not only an extremely liberal democommie, she was a "populist". Molly Ivins worships her, which ought to tell you plenty.
Now to me, "populist" is just another code-word for socialist, collectivist, communist, progressive, or liberal. All just different shades from light pink to bright red, but all with the same damned results.
But I digress.
Anyway, ol' Annie went and pulled a huge political miscalculation. The Texas Legislature passed a CCW bill designed to avoid ol' Annie's veto. It did not directly give Texas the right to carry. Rather, they passed a bill putting that issue on the ballot for all Texas to vote "yay" or "nay" on. They weren't brave enough to actually just flat out pass a CCW law, but at least they were smart enough to punt it to the voters.
What's this genius in Ohio about to do, you ask?
Ohio's Republican Gov. Bob Taft said he would veto a bill passed Thursday by the state Legislature allowing qualified citizens to obtain concealed weapons carry permits.
In Texas, Ms. Richards promptly vetoed that bill. And got her ass kicked by none other than George W. Bush in the next election. Her arrogance in vetoing even the chance for people to vote on this cost her dearly, and set the stage for the second Bush Presidency. Texas voters were eagerly awaiting the chance to vote on the CCW. Texans have long memories.
Governor Taffy seems to be making the same mistake.
The measure was passed widely in the House and Senate, and would allow state residents to carry concealed weapons after instruction courses and training.
The next CCW bill the Texas Legislature passed was a direct CCW passage.
Now then, this so called Republican asshat in the Governor's chair up in Ohio ought to read some Texas history. No one's going to give a tinker's damn what party label he wears. Should he follow through on his promised veto of Ohio's Right to Carry bill, he too should have his ass handed to him on a platter when the polls close.
Somehow, I believe that Ohio voters will remember this kind of arrogance:
Taft said he would veto the bill because it did not include a provision allowing reporters access to concealed carry holders' lists by county. The bill passed would only allow reporters limited name-by-name access."We really came very close to a bill that I could sign, and it's regrettable that we did not, but the public records portion of the bill is simply too limiting," Taft said.
Just what every law abiding gun owner wants. Their name and address posted for every screaming, crying, hand-wrining moonbat see. No telling the mischief that'd flow from that bonehead move. At least maybe the burglars and home-invaders would know what address to avoid?
Currently, state law gives people arrested for carrying a hidden gun a chance to prove that the practice was essential for safety, a so-called affirmative defense.
And completely useless if you're unlucky to have to appear in front of a liberal judge.
Folks, it's RINO season. No bag limit.
>"populast" is just another code-word for socialist"
The word puts me on my guard too, but you never know. It's often used that way by socialist reporters, but Bush himself was acting as a 'populist' (denotation not connotation) when he used his support for the CCW bill to win election. No problem there.
