I read a book once that said that's a useful method of determining if a crash was due to pilot error. If the pilot says "Oh shit," right before impact there's a good chance it was his fault.

Well you're probably right. I'm no pilot but in the three car crashes I was in (only one of them my fault) I said "Oh shit!" every time.
