The disgraced former Executive Editor of New York Times has somehow tripped across a clue.
Here's what Howell Raines has to say about John Fucking Kerry, as reported in the media insider magazine Editor and Publisher.
NEW YORK Former New York Times Executive Editor Howell Raines, on the hot seat again as controversy over the newspaper's Iraq coverage during his tenure continues to swirl, has written a column for The Guardian in London today on John Kerry that concludes that he "has to get better as a candidate." One problem, according to Raines: Kerry is "pompous" and "ponderous."
Now, understand this. For Raines to utter one single criticism of any democrat is roughly the equivalent of Ariel Sharon sitting down and sharing a nice roast pork dinner with Yasser Arafat.
But wait. The Flying Pig Sqadron is just warming up for takeoff. There's more!
He also declared that Kerry has an "Addams Family" face--"as if Lurch had gone to Choate."
I forget. Was it Misha or Limbaugh who first made that Lurch observation? Raines' NYT would have only refered to Kerry's visage in terms of "noble" or "patrician" or "rugged" and other vain attempts to otherwise deflect attention from the fact that the guy really does resemble some real Hollywood frights. (sneer quotes courtesy of NYT archives)
Like this one, for example:
I think Gomer actually has better military qualifications. Anyway, continuing with Raines......
Where Bill Clinton's most famous campaign message was, "It's the economy stupid," Kerry's seems to be, according to Raines, "It's the war, sort of, and it's the economy, maybe."
I'd love to have a fly's eye view of the screaming and wailing and gnashing of teeth going on right now in many a DNC office and in hundreds of newsrooms across the country. Priceless!
Raines believes Kerry can win "in a campaign that's going to become the political equivalent of a street fight" but every time he talks to "a reporter who has covered him, new doubts creep in about his ability to connect with voters.
Raines can decieive himself all he wants, but if even liberal reporters are put-off by Kerry's imperiousness, now much more clearly does Joe Public see this Aristocrat-By-Dowry for the lecherous, grasping weasel that he really is?
"I personally find him easier to talk to than Al Gore, but there's no denying that he's ponderous," Raines continued.
Talking to pine board is easier than talking to Al Gore. And you get a more intellegent conversation with the board, too. But, that quote does give Kerry a Gore-like name.... Ponderous-a Pine. I think it fits.
"And he's pompous in a way that Gore is not. With Gore, you feel that if he could choose, he would have been born poor and cool. Kerry radiates the feeling that he is entitled to his sense of entitlement. Probably that comes from spending too much time with Teddy Kennedy, but it's a problem. The TV camera is an x-ray for picking up attitudinal truths, and Kerry's lantern jaw and Addams Family face somehow reinforce the message that this guy has passed from ponderous to pompous and is so accustomed to privilege that he doesn't have to worry about looking goofy. It's as if Lurch had gone to Choate.
What? Me fisk that? Naaahhhh....it's perfect, just as it is.
"Recently, a lot of campaign reporters were writing that Kerry is altering his 'populist' message and moving to the centre. If John Kerry was ever a populist, George W Bush is a Rhodes scholar. Here's what Kerry has to face up to and build upon. The difference between him and Bush is that Kerry represents the liberal, charitable wing of the Privilege party and George W represents the conservative, greedy wing of the Privilege party...."
Well, for Raines, one out of four right isn't really bad. Oh, and yes, I'm proud to be a greedy conservative. Here from National Review Online, via BrokenMasterpieces, are the facts about each candidate:
John Kerry's charitable contributions from 1991-1995Kerry's returns from 1995 and earlier, before his marriage to Heinz, have sometimes attracted criticism over the issue of charitable giving. In 1995, according to published reports, Kerry reported a taxable income of $126,179, and charitable contributions of $0. In 1994, he reported income of $127,884, and charitable donations of $2,039. In 1993, he reported income of $130,345, and contributions of $175. In 1992, he reported income of $127,646, and contributions of $820. In 1991, he reported income of $113,857, and contributions of $0.
George W. Bush's giving from 1991-1993.
As far as Bush is concerned, in 1991, the future president, then a private citizen, reportedly had income of $179,591, and charitable contributions of $28,236. In 1992, Bush reported income of $212.313, and contributions of $31,914. In 1993, Bush reported income of $610,772, and contributions of $31,292. In 1994, Bush reported income of $474,937 and in 1995, income of $419,481. Published reports at that time did not list Bush's charitable contributions for those two years.
More from Raines....
"Surely someone in Kerry's campaign can figure out a way for him to say, 'Here's my plan for getting us out of Iraq and defeating terrorism,' and 'Here's my plan for making sure you're not sick and poor in your old age.' And then make him say it over and over again, no matter what question is asked of him.
Howell....Lurch Kerry has been telling us his plan for "getting us out of Iraq" since day one of his campaign. Almost as often as he "reminds" us about his having been in Vietnam. But the voters just aren't going to go for his intentions to turn Iraq over to the French, German and Russian backstabbers.
The press might not want to remember 9-11. The NYT might not want to remember the betrayal of Chiraq and Schroeder.
But most Americans will never forget. Ever.
"Kerry has to face the fact that even though the incumbent looks like Goofy when he smirks, he's going to win unless Kerry comes up with something to say. To stay 'on message' you have to have one."(emphasis, mine)
That last line will make a nice epithet on the tombstone of the Kerry '04 campaign.
My favorite part was how Raines suggested that Kerry get elected: Lie to the electorate to profit from our small-minded greediness. After all, quoth Raines, that's how the Republicans do it. Kerry need only project himself as not being a "redistributionist Democrat" so that he can get elected and be a... "redistributionist Democrat."
Simple! Just lie to us!
After all, as former editor of the NYT, Howell Raines ought to know all about that.
