UPDATE 092705 1549 CST: I just a call from the Cap'n, who seemed to be in especially fine spirits. It seems that he has found out that most boats in Galveston Bay survived, and is even more sure that the New Dawn is OK. For now, he has joined the Knights-Errant of the Kingdom of Mercy, and he will be helping his host family return to Dayton and resume life at their house. It seems that Dayton got all it's power from Beaumont, and that town lies flattened by Rita, including the power plant and it's grid. Dayton will not have power for weeks, as the grid has to be rebuilt from scratch, and re-extended out to Dayton. If anyone knows of a generator set in Houston that isn't being used, let me know so I can pass the word. He mentioned that his hotel is being guarded by two cops from NOLA, who seem to be in no hurry to get back to their hometown. Very strange. He asked that I remind his "crew" to please refrain from calling him on his cell phone.

UPDATE: 092605 1723 CST: I just tried to call the Cap'n to relay a message of importance to him, and got a "mailbox is full" warning from the phone service. IF I CAN'T GET THROUGH TO HIM BY VOICEMAIL, THE COMM SYSTEM IS HALF-ASSED. Please don't call Jim's cell number unless he has RECENTLY asked you to. He turns it off, and the mailbox fills up quickly, then none of us can get through to him. He asked specifically that I relay all messages to him from my email: [email protected] or from his or my blogs. I will do that as I am able, but now I've just lost an important part of my communications chain. Some consideration for Jim here, please.

I just spoke with Cap'n Jim of the Sloop New Dawn. His position, and the position of his host family up in Dayton was getting a little too rough, with the Trinity River still rising from the inland effects of Rita, and no relief in sight from the utility outages.
The slit-trench latrine was getting a bit too basic, also. And the bugs, I imagine, and the heat and humidity as well.
So, they packed up their respective vehicles and moved into a motel on the NW side of Houston. There is power there, and air conditioning, and lots of fresh hot water for long showers. The stores are open, and vital supplies are available. Mint julep for those tropical evenings, don't you think? Mmmmmm.
There's no phone service, however, so still no internet for the Cap'n.
He's not going to make it to the New Dawn for a while yet, but he seems more sure than ever that she is OK.
We'll continue with the Yeoman blogging services for now.
H&DS...your msg authenticates, I'll keep you in the loop.
Rivrdog, listening, out.
Am I mistaken, or is the complaining about the loss of airconditioning by our freinds on the right much louder than the complaints about the loss of life in New Orleans?
Just Asking

Hey, pass on the message, please. I'm in NW Houston, and if he needs cash, ammo, catfood, or whatever, drop me a line.

bbbustard,
We bitch about the small stuff to keep from going mad from the big stuff. I for one am thrilled that the death count here in the New Orleans metro area is a lot lower than it originally was expected to be.

Could I be mistaken, Mr. Bustard, or did I just now read on your blog the admonition to "be nice unless otherwise instructed"?
I don't recall injecting any political discourse into this post. It's purpose is only that of communication between the blog-owner and those who actually care about him.
We're on the right, and you're on the left. That means nothing until everyone is accounted for. After that point, if you want a bit of left-right discourse, the Cap'n will accomodate you.
Until then, you'll have to go to MY blog for those enlightening words.
If your're not familiar with it, it's:

I take no responsibility if you see yourself mentioned there by class, action or philosophy and have a conniption fit.
That is all, Mr. Bustard.

Thanks for the continued updates, RivrDog. My heart goes out to Jim and his host family. I remember well living in such basic conditions in the past, and I certainly don't envy them that situation. I'm glad that they've fled for dryer and more comfortable--and more hygenic--domains for now.
Prayers to all, of course!

Hey Rivrdog - visited your site, and saw nothing personally insulting. I apologize for politicizing a non-political post. I do spend a lot of time visiting right of center blogs, and it drove me a bit crazy that their concerns about air conditioning for pets often seems stronger than their concern for people.

P.S. I love the manly offer from baboonpirates of "ammo, catfood". Is this for real?

Apology accepted, Mr. Bustard. As pet owners, we have an unavoidable moral stewardship of our animals. If they are suffering, it is mandatory for us to relieve that suffering.
An equal tragedy to the loss of human life in these storms is the loss of life of animals.
The emergency vets that are down there in the makeshift pet hopsitals are doing no less an important job as the emergency doctors.

bbbustard--Being among those who prefer to be armed and happen to love cats as well, I'd have to say that, yes, that was a "for real" offer.
Are you among those who believe the 2nd Amendment outlines the rights of the individual to bear arms? If so, you need to check out the Carnival of Cordite site (http://gullyborg.typepad.com/carnival_of_cordite/) where you can find links to all the earlier carnivals. If you're not, check it out anyway--become a convert, you'll feel better. ;^)

Just had a short phone call from Jim. He and cats were doing well in NW Houston. He talked to his harbor mate, John, who rode out the storm on his own boat and all our prayers were answered as the New Dawn safely rode out the storm. Jim still has no phone service where he is so will rely on Yeoman Rvrdog to keep posting for now. He promises updates as soon as he is able. For now, he thanks all of you for the 100's of emails and he will reply when he has time...be patient and keep praying.

I checked on the New Dawn this morning, she was looking real pretty. None of the boats in that harbor got much damage. that I could see.
